Frequently Asked Questions

How does online counseling work?

I offer secure, convenient counseling from the comfort of your couch instead of mine. My clients are finding online counseling to be easy and very convenient to do, even for the "not-so-tech-savvy" people, like myself. The day before your session you will receive a reminder for your session and a link for your session. All that is needed for online counseling is secure, reliable Internet, a private space to have your sessions, and headphones if desired. I am able to provide online counseling to anyone residing in Kentucky.

How long and how often are sessions?

Sessions are generally 45-60 minutes long and can occur weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your need. I only offer monthly sessions once a client is close to being done with counseling and will be ready to be discharged in 2-3 months. Consistency of sessions is very important in order to get the most benefit out of counseling. I also recommend that clients practice the skills and techniques we discuss in session, outside of sessions.

Will my insurance cover Telehealth sessions?

Kentucky has a parity law requiring private payors to reimburse telehealth services on the same basis that they do in person services. That being said, if your insurance plan requires that a deductible be met before they will cover services, then you would need to pay out of pocket for sessions until your deductible is met. Some insurances cover 100%, while others may cover 80% or even less. It depends on your insurance policy.

What can I expect at my first session?

The first session is called an “Intake” and during the session I’ll ask you questions on your presenting issue, psychiatric history, family, medications, trauma, among other topics. The first session is conversational, laid back, and we do not get “too deep” into anything at that point. I am just gathering information in order to determine a possible diagnosis. I often have clients complete screeners or assessments using “screen sharing,” to further assess their symptoms. We’ll also discuss your personal triggers for your symptoms, as well as your goals for counseling.

Do you assist in legal matters?

Services are limited to clinical and therapeutic support only. I am not the appropriate service provider for clients who have current or potential legal issues, such as divorce, custody issues, social services, domestic violence, etc. As a solo provider, I do not have enough external resources, time, or capacity to manage this complex clientele. I’d be happy to provide referrals though.
